What to Do About a Broken Braces Bracket

Posted .

A common orthodontic emergency is a broken braces bracket. Brackets often become damaged because they are fragile and can become damaged by several things, including:

– Eating foods that can be damaging to braces
– An injury to the mouth
– Brushing teeth too vigorously or incorrectly in some way
– Using a toothpick
– Flossing too vigorously

In the case of an orthodontic emergency, there are certain steps that Dr. John Fleming recommends that you follow.

Examine the Damage
The first thing you need to do is check the extent of the damage. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place.

Take Action
If the bracket is attached but is sticking out, use a cotton swab to gently push it back into place. Orthodontic wax can be used to hold the bracket in its correct position until you can come to Quality Orthodontic Care. If the wires are protruding, press them back against the tooth and cover them with orthodontic wax to prevent injury to the inside of your mouth.
