Did you know that you still need to take care of your smile while you align your teeth with orthodontics? Well, it’s true! You need to do all you can to keep your chompers healthy and your appliance strong. If you take proper care of your smile, your treatment will remain on track and you won’t need to worry about having dental problems, like tooth decay and gum disease. So, to help you keep your pearly whites and your braces in tip-top shape, our Quality Orthodontic Care team recommends doing the following things:
Keep up on oral hygiene
Oral hygiene is vital, especially during orthodontic treatment. If you don’t properly clean your smile each day, food and plaque can get stuck in the small crevices of your teeth and appliance, which can easily cause tooth decay, enamel stains, and gum disease. So, please brush and floss your smile after each meal and snack and do your best to rinse your mouth with mouthwash once a day.
Avoid certain foods
There are certain foods that can harm your teeth and damage your braces, and those foods are: sugary, starchy, chewy, and sticky products. The sugary and starchy foods tend to create tooth decay and other dental issues while the chewy and sticky foods break your brackets and wires. Please do your best to avoid these products.
Wear a mouthguard
If you want to protect your teeth and orthodontic appliance, it’s best to wear a mouthguard while you are active. If you don’t, there is a high chance of hard, forceful objects hitting your mouth and injuring your smile. So, if you want to prevent broken teeth and broken brackets, please wear a mouthguard while you are active.
